I had a box in the back of my van with my most precious possessions. I packed them when he was out. He never noticed them missing but I did not pack clothes. I consider myself to be very lucky, he left but I was prepared to run I will never forget the night. He was up and drinking, I had learned to stay at least four feet away from him in case I needed to move away. He was angry and saying his usual ugly stuff and something just snapped He needed to use the bathroom, I took that moment to wake up our daughter and told her to just get dressed and grab her doll and blue bunny that we were going for a ride. He came out just as she was coming into the kitchen. Luckily our apartment was set up with two ways out and he was too drunk to move quickly. I had already punched 911 on my cell and told my daughter to go outside. I grabbed my purse and as I did he yelled at our daughter "if you leave with that whore you do not love me". My then eleven year old daughter became an adult her response was "she is not a whore she is my mother and I love you but right now I do not like you". As I backed both her and I out I told him not to follow us. I handed our daughter the phone and told her to go outside again. He advanced to stop but I had a distance. I informed him that 911 was already punched on my phone and all our daughter had to do was push the green phone. He kept coming, as I kept backing out, he told me he knew where I was going. My answer was "you might know but I will not be stopping at that house, I will be banging on the door of another home" My father's neighbor was a member of the local police force, I told him "imagine, my father hearing his daughter screaming for our neighbor that she and his granddaughter's life were in danger".

We made it to the van and were inside ready to go when he came out willing to go back to the hospital. My daughter begged me to take him. We made him sit all the way in the back and both of us watched him. I warned him the phone was still ready to go and I gave our daughter our location every move we made. He was too wasted to move much or so I thought. We were four blocks from the hospital when he got out and ran off on us. I realize now that was a foolish move, I should have run. However, the doctor in the hospital declared him a danger and had him brought back to the hospital. Again, I realize I was foolish, I never obtained a protection order. I foolishly believed he would never physically harm us, after all I had thought all the weapons had been removed by the local police. He never did, but he did catch us off guard by coming back in to get his stuff.

The hospital did not warn me he was being discharged. After he removed his possessions I changed the locks. I wish I had found a site like this back then.

And for moms with kids, make sure a good friend holds onto their birth certificates, passports, health records--anything a school or doctor might require. Preparation to leave is hard, but necessary.

Thank You!

Thank you for sharing that very valuable information! You were able to give me new ideas to add to my safety planning for working on the lines or in person. I didn't realize that ID is expected on planes. We have a resource with pilots we can utilize to some degree, and haven't ran into that problem yet; however, as any other agency our resources are limited and can't use them unless they meet specific criteria for a flight.

This makes a difference when our client does plan on taking a flight outside of "Angel Flight". This program has pilots that are willing to fly within a 1,000 mile radius to get our client somewhere.

Thank you for sharing with us!
