She slept on the bus with her kids last night and then went into her local DSHS and they hooked her up with some motel vouchers which go out of her housing fund once she finds a place. It's the fund DSHS will pay once a year. Don't remember what it's called. Found out that the shelter I am at does have motel vouchers and Taxi vouchers they just refused to give them to her.
At least she has some where to go with her kids for right now.

I can't imagine this situation--a woman and kids becoming homeless because their time at the shelter is up--at the shelter where I volunteer. That sounds so heartless, crowded or not.
I hope this woman has contacted the local welfare dept. first and State/Fed. Welfare Dept. second because I think the local welfare dept. usually has motel vouchers, at least in many larger CT cities they do. Then the State takes over when the parent finds an apartment.

Ya ya, I already know! I am putting myself first, I'm just learning how to multi-task better without getting overwelmed!
So the woman I helped last night, did her 3 screenings. Two of them didn't have openings, and the other one (same one I had problems with) flat out told her no. The reason being they refuse to take anyone who has ever been in a DV shelter before. So now this poor woman is out on the streets with her 4 year old daughter and 18 month old son.
So ya that's great! The shelter wouldn't even help her get a hotel voucher. I am so angry about the system we have in place. This woman literally has lived in the trauma triangle her whole life, decided to do something about it, left her abuser. Meanwhile he got put in jail for what he had done to her. She gets a job, puts her children in a wonderful daycare, while she applies for every transitional housing available. Then her 28 days is up, she gets refused an extension.
No shelters have openings, and now shes going to lose some of the transitional housing because she is on the streets and no longer in a shelter. She doesn't want to move to a distant location because that means losing everything she has worked so hard for!
I swear when I get out of my own DV situation I'm going to figure out how to make the system better and fight for it. I'm going to take my anger and do something positive with it. How can the system screw over 2 innocent children and their mother like this????? Grrrrr!!!!
On a good note I had my phone interview for one of the confidential transitional housing locations today. I have an in person meeting on Friday! My hard work is about to pay off. Not to sound ungrateful because things could be worse for me but by next week I won't have to deal with those horrible bed bugs, filthy living conditions, and foul smells anymore! I will survive through this and eventually I'll live a normal life again.

You have a heart of gold, Jane. I understand that it is frustrating when an advocate tells you to take stuff on, and maybe the best way to look at that is you are being empowered to make the decisions, and to work your personal program. Try not to take it personally.
Empowering you is one thing. Refusing to help you is another. If it continues, document the situations, so if you feel you may need to speak to someone else you will have the information in front of you, and the advocate you feel most comfortable with can help problem solve the situations with you.
Every shelter is going to be different. I know that when I speak with clients about what shelter looks like I have to let them in the biggest secret ever......that shelter is not a huge room full of cots when it comes to dv and sa clients.
Every shelter program is going to have the good and the bad quirks to them, but a shelter program is to provide the basic needs and safety for the residents. It is not a place to get to comfortable because shelter programs are limited stays.
I know you enjoy helping others, but be clear to take care of you first. Your energy can be just as much used in determining what you want in your future, and in determining how you want to see it through.
I am so glad you continue to blog Jane. It is healthy for you to have an outlet, and others to support you, so you don't have to feel so alone in this process.
I found a good resource for you that may help with housing I do not know. Give them a shot.
